Our Story
One of the most hard working and anthemic folk punk acts to come out of Australia, Benny Mayhem and the Benny Mayhem Band have covered a lot of ground, literally and figuratively.
From being primarily a solo artist in 2016, Benny Mayhem has now evolved into an experience ranging from a 4 piece live band which combines power and harmonies in his unique folk-punk style, Benny Mayhem Solo and their incredible six piece festival show featuring two amazing drummers working side-by-side to recreate their new album.
Musically, they blend the roots of the folk punk genre (bands such as The Pogues, Flogging Molly, Arcade Fire) with an Australian element that has been compared in style to Paul Kelly and other storytellers. There is also no mistaking the Irish influence in his music, a big part of his musical background.
The latest album called “Bootlegs” also enters the Grunge territory, with as many power anthems as there are acoustic journeys through the 15 songs. It is the first part of a 30 track double album, with Part 2 being recorded now.
Ben’s roots are in the South West Australian town of Albany, famous for its whales and the beautiful yet treacherous Southern Ocean that has inspired much of his work.
After a successful career in WA and most of Australia with seminal WA punk rock bank “Project Mayhem” came to an end, Benny Mayhem headed overseas to base himself in Europe and tour the world as a solo artist, playing lots of festivals but also some pub shows.
He took in Amsterdam, London, Paris, Berne, Brussels, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, Hamburg and many many more great cities, with a special invite to play the mother of all punk festivals – Rebellion! – alongside Pennywise, Bad Religion and other punk legends.
When he moved back to Australia, Benny Mayhem teamed up with Steve & Lorelle Correia to put together his best ever touring band which currently includes Kyle Hearn (2 x Dux of TAFE Music Program) on guitar, Luke Clifton on bass and young prodigy Sage Phillips on drums. They are often joined by another super talented drummer, Harry Buck on drums as well.
The band is playing 80-100 shows every year in WA alone to big crowds from Karratha to Perth to Esperance and everywhere in between.
In 2024 they expanded their list of services to include Youth Music Workshops in Regional WA that have proven extremely popular and valuable to young musicians from Wickham and Roebourne to Yalgoo and Laverton. Most shows have also been part of their “Save The Koalas” tour project which has now raised more than $40,000 to directly benefit wildlife that has been injured or displaced by fire.
